More on High Cholesterol Problems:

  1. Problem in circulatory system which causes coronary heart disease: High cholesterol may interfere with blood flow throughout your body. There are two types of lipoproteins which move cholesterol through your bloodstream. LDL (bad cholesterol) takes the cholesterol where it is needed and HDL (good cholesterol) takes the extra cholesterol from tissues & cells to the liver for reprocessing. The function of arteries is to move the blood from your heart to other parts of the body. Excess of LDL and less amount of HDL may cause the deposition of cholesterol in the arteries. It causes blockage in the flow of blood and puts you at high risk of having heart attack.
  2. Problem in digestion: The partial clogging of arteries also blocks the flow of blood to kidneys, stomach and intestine (intestinal ischemic syndrome). It may lead to abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and blood in stools or intestinal perforation.
  3. Gallstones: High cholesterol also leads to bile imbalance and gallstones (cholesterolosis). As per the study, more than 80 percent of gallstones are cholesterol stones.
  4. Peripheral vascular disease (PVD): The medical condition in which the blood vessels supplying blood to the limbs and other organs of the body are partially or completely blocked due to plaque build-up by high cholesterol LDL levels. The plaque deposits gradually harden and narrow the opening of the arteries. It limits the oxygen-rich blood supply to the parts of your body especially to the legs. It causes cramping, fatigue, pain in legs during exertion, discomfort in legs and feet.
  5. Type-2 diabetes: Type-2 diabetes is another disease linked to high cholesterol. Even if blood sugar levels are appropriate, people with diabetes tend to have increased triglycerides, decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and sometimes increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL). This condition leads to the  development of atherosclerosis.
  6. High blood pressure: High cholesterol also leads to the issue of high blood pressure (hypertension). Once the arteries have become hardened and narrowed with due to deposition of plaque and calcium (atherosclerosis), the heart has to strain much harder to pump blood through them. Hence, blood pressure becomes abnormally high.
